Statue at Blenheim Airport.
Statues don't come much uglier than this one!
The statue, at Blenheim's Airport, is to commemorate the supposed first person to make wine in Marlborough, but there is much dispute about this among the wine industry.
The man was David Herd who was making wine in 1870 and has a photo to prove it, this statue is modeled from his photo, but it scares passengers who arrive at Blenheim's Airport with his fierce glare.. I think they imagine him throwing his wine jug at them! But he hasn't as yet.
It has taken a century, but Marlborough is now the major wine producing area of New Zealand. Mr Herds vineyard is no more!
In the background you can see two small air craft are called Beeches, they fly between Wellington and Blenheim mainly.

Looks to me like he's been drinking a little too much of the wine that he supposedly is making! Fun shot!
Thank for your post in the my blog.-
Beautiful your shot :-)
I love that statue, it looks like something Edward Gorey drew. Great shot :)
A wine maker should be happier.
That's quite a scowl. You would think that they would have made a happier version of him for the statue.
This place has a fascinating history, thanks for sharing:)
Thanks for the visit & have a nice day.
He does look rather fierce! I love Marlborough region wine, my favourite being sauvingnon blanc. I'm very much looking forward to having a chilled glass when I get home.
He doesn't look very friendly, that's for sure! Good thing we took the ferry instead of flying to the south island last year!
Thanks for visiting.
Once I took a look at your larger version of the image, I tend to agree with you on that stare part.
Glennis: What a neat statue and a fine welcome to your world.
thanks a great picture - his chin can't be missed.
Well since I was asking (over at 'a few clowns short') for travel pictures and it's an airport I'll use that post - unless you would like me to use another one.
thanks
