Sheep Farm Wairau Valley

My World, This is my latest posting for the My World meme. It is hosted by Klaus, Ivar,Sandy, Wren, Louise and fishing guy. Do join in and show us all your world.

Sheep Farming in the Wairau Valley, there was a time when there were more sheep than people in our country., but not any more, now there is more diversification down on the farms, new crops and new animals are being farmed. In the district the viticulture has taken over much of the sheep farming land. There is greater profit in grape growing and less work year round.

Paddocks full of sheep graze peacefully in their paddocks up the Wairau Valley in Marlborough.
At the shearing shed sheep await their turn to have their fleece removed.

Hmmm. If I had to choose, I think I'd choose the sheep and their fleece. I'd make wine from the abundance of dandelions.

Yes, I remember the days when were outnumbered by the sheep.

I used to joke that if the sheep ever revolted, then us Kiwis would be in big trouble !! :-)

Lovely photos...

Thank you for popping past my blog! Yours is very interesting! To answer your comment about taking them a truck load of timber, I wish it was possible. There are 25 000 people living in that settlement and crime is rife. It is certainly not a place to go into! A good idea though!

My bring my family next time.
So now I can see the bear since they are new.

Have a great day,

South Africa also has big sheep farming areas. Just north of us is a dry nearly semi desert area called the Karoo where there is a lot of sheep farming. There is a very big demand for Karoo lamb in the shops as the Karoo vegitation naturally flavours the meat.

NZ looks beautiful. I have never heard of anyone who visited there and didn't love it. Someday I'd like to see it in person.

They look remarkeably like English Leicesters. We have some as well although as a breed they are not profitable except when cross-bred for lambs.
I am so sorry to see so much land under viticulture. We have the same thing here in Oz as well and the bottom is starting to fall out or the profitability for farmers as there is a glut of grapes.
Nice post.

so, it was quite true what i've heard before that NZ has more sheep than people. i can see vast expanse of green in your pics and it's no wonder if there're more agricultural activities. The pics are very nice.

Are you paying more than $5 per pack of cigs? I buy high quality cigs over at Duty Free Depot and this saves me over 50% from cigarettes.
